Weaving together
diverse musical traditions with the powerful rhythms of West Africa, the unique
and high energy music of MAMADOU sets feet and spirits dancing. The band has been
enthusiastically received by club and festival audiences who welcome the opportunity
to experience their joyful combination of musical genres.
The band performs original music composed and performed by Mamadou Diop of Sénégal,
with Mamadou on vocals, rhythm guitar and hand drums, master drummer Ibrahima
Camara from Sénégal on djembe, sabar and tama (talking) hand drums,
Pavel Jirka from the Czech Republic on lead guitar, Peter Meyer of Gloucester,
MA on bass guitar, Ted Sillars of Salem, MA on drum set and Adam Zampino of Marblehead,
MA on keyboards.
Prior to coming to the United States, Mamadou Diop was considered the greatest
rhythm guitarist in Senegal. He toured Africa, Europe and Canada performing with
such luminaries as Baaba Maal, Youssou N'Dour, Jimmy Mbaye among others. Combine
that talent with Ibrahima Camara, a master drummer who has performed with Stevie
Wonder and saxophonist Pharoah Sanders, the rhythms of this band's music has to
be experienced to be understood.
Pavel and Ted were joined by Mamadou in 1998, just two years after he came to
the United States (Boston, MA). Ibrahima, a long-time friend of Mamadou, has been
in the United States for about 28 years. He provides authentic African percussion,
joining the band shortly thereafter. Adam came on-board as the keyboardist in
2000. Peter joined early in 2001. Together, they are MAMADOU. |
